One of our primary birding targets for the trip was to see a male Resplendent Quetzal. They have rich colors with long spendid tails. We timed our visit in May hoping to increase our odds for seeing this beautiful bird. We were able to connect with guide, Erick Granados, who took us to a local home where there was a great setup for imaging a male and female quetzal flying to and from a nest hole. Resplendent Quetzals will only bring food back to a nest if there are chicks there and we saw them both bring avocados and insects.

In addition, the Savegre Hotel, where we were staying, had a well stocked avocado tree on their property where numerous male and female quetzals flew in and out to eat the ripened fruits. It is an excellent place to stay with a wide variety of birds to see on the property and along the road.
