Growing up in South Florida and diving here my whole life I have had infrequent glimpses of the Great Northern Hammerhead. This elusive and incredibly graceful predator is as timid as it is beautiful. Usually a brief sighting in low visibility of this shark and it is gone. Two trips to the Bahamas in search of them have proved how hard it is to get a close encounter.
This year we had the good luck to dive with 3 Great N. Hammerheads including one approximately 16 feet long. The 3 or 4 Tiger sharks who crashed the party were exciting to see but watching the great hammer’s sweep of that huge tail and dramatic dorsal fin stole the show for me. As usual, visibility was poor but the encounter magical.
Special thanks to Randy Jordan and his crew of Emerald Charters for making this happen – John
