Mustache Jawfish

Another new find for us at Blue Heron Bridge last weekend. From an internet search, the fish appears to be a Mustache Jawfish. The identifying marks were the yellow orange coloring above the lips and the dark splotch behind and slightly below the eye. George Burgess Jr, has identified it as an Opisthognathus lonchurus which is unusual for this dive site. The body and lips have a fantastic turquoise color. This jawfish hadn’t established a burrow and was free swimming, digging partial holes and spitting out sand. You may notice some bristle worm spines in two of the pictures. The worm was inside an overturned shell that the fish was testing out. Ouch!
