Whenever we saw wild dogs or lions in South Luangwa, we saw spotted hyenas and hooded vultures. The vultures would stalk around and display their wings. The hyenas followed the wild dogs through brush and wide open areas, hanging back slightly but keeping up.
When we found the lions with the fresh zebra kill, a pack of hyenas were hanging around. They sounded off bringing another hunting group in to help them “mob” the lions. We were told this interaction between two clans was unusual. There was a lot of nervous/aggressive displays and vocalizations as they came together. 15+ individuals could be seen at one time.
Although there seemed like opportunities to steal from the male, they never made a move while we were there. While the female lion was eating her zebra leg, they cried just feet away as she crunched the bones. They made their frustration known. It was incredible to watch.
