Ecuador is home to over 40% of the world’s hummingbirds. There are birds with crests, wire tails, puff legs, long bills, curved bills and wild colors. We staked out numerous feeders, flowering plants, roadsides and moving streams hoping to catch some of these fantastic birds. We even visited a priest’s house for the Spangled Coquette thanking him for allowing us to visit his lovely garden. We were all happy!

You may note, from the blurred wings, that we did not use strobes for these hummingbird images. Sometimes, the light highlighted the hummingbird colors and other times the colors were invisible. We shot a high number of images and rejected many.
